![]() ![]() The show was a critical and popular hit for the BBC as well as Michael Palin, and it had everything I was into – adventure stories, a healthy dose of “route talk”, and a fair bit of absurdist humour. The idea of this seven part series was that Michael Palin would try to recreate (as closely as possible) the route the fictional Phineas Fogg took to circumnavigate the globe in Jules Verne’s 1873 classic novel, and to see if it was actually possible to do the journey in 80 days. Life changed in 1989 when the BBC hired Palin for Around the World in 80 Days. Why don’t we take a moment and enjoy a bit of the silliness again? In particular, he was familiar to many as the “straight man” in the famous “Dead Parrot Sketch” duelling with John Cleese. Palin was known mostly as a founding member of Britain’s influential and ground-breaking comedy troupe, Monty Python. Highly recomended read for fans of offbeat travel books. But as the saying goes, the fun was in the journey, not the destination. Also the ending is somewhat anti-climatic. " Excellent read! The last leg from NY to London drags out a bit as nothing really happened. Palin is a nice, if (surprisingly) not great, reader. MP is doing the reading and it is a lot of fun. " I'm listening to this one - fabulous companion to the first travel show Michael Palin did (can it really be almost 20 years ago?). " Really enjoyed this! I love Michael Palin's style, and hearing him read his travel diaries is fun. " A modern attempt at recreating the old Jules Verne tale. Great descriptions of places I've never been to. A great way to go around the world without leaving your home. By the end, the listener is almost as exhausted as Palin from all the travel. " A fun and informative travelogue an early outing for the comedian who's made a second career out of this kind of thing. It did make me rather nostalgic for some of my travel memories, and look forward to reading his other books. Enjoyably written, more about the people and the travel than the places. " Not having ever seen the TV series (this or his other journeys) I didn't come to this with any pre-conceived ideas. A simile is a direct comparison of two like or unlike things. For example: as proud as a peacock, as busy as a bee and so on. The general idea of using a simile with the word ‘as’ is by using a noun that is known for a particular quality. The easiest way to identify a simile as opposed to a metaphor is to look for the words ‘like’ or ‘as’. Similes are often confused with metaphors, which is another different figure of speech used for comparison.
